Maple Leafs Appoint New Head Coach
The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced the appointment of Jim Hiller as the hockey club’s new head coach. This decision makes Hiller the 41st head coach in the franchise’s history. The announcement on Wednesday has generated varied reactions, particularly online, as Hiller was not widely linked to the position in prior reports.
General Manager John Chayka expressed confidence in the new hire, stating that Hiller is an experienced coach with a strong understanding of what is required to succeed in the NHL. Chayka highlighted Hiller’s history of working with successful teams, his ability to connect with players, and his clear approach behind the bench. He believes Hiller is the right individual to lead the team and help them achieve their objectives.
Hiller himself conveyed excitement about returning to Toronto and leading the Maple Leafs. He described the organization as special, noting its great players, passionate fans, and high expectations. Hiller stated his eagerness to begin working with the players and staff to help the team reach its full potential.
Hiller’s Coaching Background and Philosophy
Prior to his new role with the Maple Leafs, Hiller served as head coach of the Los Angeles Kings from 2023-24 through 2025-26. During his tenure with the Kings, he accumulated a record of 93-58-24 over 175 games, achieving a .600 win percentage. Before becoming the Kings’ head coach, Hiller spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the team from 2022-23 to 2023-24.
His coaching experience also includes a stint as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders from 2019-20 to 2021-22 and a previous period as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2015-16 to 2018-19. During his four seasons as an assistant in Toronto, the Maple Leafs qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs on three occasions. Hiller also has seasons of experience coaching junior hockey in Canada, leading the Tri-City Americans to two division titles and five consecutive playoff appearances during a five-year period.
Hiller’s coaching philosophy emphasizes the spirit of the team and making the game enjoyable for players. He believes that the biggest impact a coach can have is guiding the team’s spirit and ensuring the game is fun. He intends to implement a style of play that players will be excited to execute.
He also highlighted the importance of skating, describing it as the first step in competing. Hiller’s approach focuses on quick, hard movements on the ice, which he believes helps foster team spirit and growth. This style is expected to suit core players like Auston Matthews and William Nylander.
Reactions and Strategic Considerations
The hiring of Hiller has elicited a range of reactions, with some social media comments indicating surprise due to his name not appearing in earlier reports about potential candidates. One former Maple Leaf player, Jay Rosehill, noted that Hiller was kept “under wraps” during the selection process but acknowledged his familiarity with the market and many of the current players.
Chayka’s extensive coaching search involved more than 25 interviews, speaking with various candidates including Cup winners, NCAA coaches, junior stars, and European bench bosses. He stated that Hiller’s preparation, plan, and knowledge of the market made him the best candidate among all those considered.
Hiller’s previous experience as an assistant under Mike Babcock in Toronto from 2015 to 2019 means he is familiar with the team’s leadership group and the local market. During that time, he was responsible for an effective power play. Chayka also mentioned that feedback from players who had worked with Hiller indicated they valued him as a person and felt he was committed to their development.
As a native of Port Alberni, British Columbia, Hiller is also expected to be familiar with the game of presumed No. 1–overall draft pick Gavin McKenna. Hiller’s co-founding of a hockey analytics company, TruPerformance, and his willingness to incorporate data into his coaching decisions align with Chayka’s vision of the coaching staff being an extension of the front office.
Chayka emphasized that the decision to hire Hiller was made with the players in mind, aiming to support their individual and collective growth.
