Ronaldo hits the pitch, England battles Croatia in heavyweight tilt Wednesday at FIFA World Cup
Wednesday’s World Cup Fixtures
The FIFA World Cup continues with a full day of matches, featuring the opening campaigns for tournament favourites Portugal and England. Additionally, Toronto Stadium is set to host its second game of the tournament.
The day’s schedule includes four matches across various stadiums, marking the conclusion of the first round of fixtures for Groups K and L.
Portugal Faces DR Congo
Portugal, co-ranked as the third favourite alongside England, will commence their World Cup journey in a Group K opener against the Democratic Republic of the Congo at Houston Stadium. Veteran player Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41 years old, is expected to lead his team in what is anticipated to be his sixth and possibly final World Cup appearance. Ronaldo holds the record for most international goals in men’s soccer history with 143, including eight at the World Cup. He previously led Portugal to victory in the 2016 UEFA European Championship.
Despite no longer competing in top-tier club leagues, Ronaldo has maintained his scoring ability, netting 129 goals over four seasons with Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. In the 2025-26 season, he scored 28 goals and provided two assists in 30 matches for Al-Nassr. Portugal is making its seventh consecutive appearance at the World Cup.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is participating in the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when they competed as Zaire. Their squad includes players like Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa, who has scored goals in national team appearances, and captain Chancel Mbemba, a centre-back for Lille with appearances for DR Congo. Midfielder Samuel Moutoussamy from the Greek Super League is also a key player for the African team.
During their match, DR Congo scored a goal, with Wissa heading it past Diogo Costa. Earlier, Mbemba received a booking after a challenge on Neto. Portugal‘s Bernardo also received a booking for a challenge on Kayembe. Portugal‘s João Neves made a header that went across the goal.
England and Croatia Clash
Dallas Stadium will host a highly anticipated Group L match between world No. 4 England and No. 11 Croatia. This fixture is a rematch of the 2018 World Cup semi-final, where Croatia defeated England before finishing as runners-up. Croatia also secured a third-place finish in 2022. Croatia‘s squad features experienced players such as captain Luka Modric, who is two games away from reaching career appearances for Croatia, having scored goals. Other key players include Ivan Perišić, forward Andrej Kramarić, and midfielder Mateo Kovačić.
England has qualified for seven consecutive World Cups and 10 out of the last 11 tournaments, though their last victory was in 1966. The team boasts a strong lineup, including forward Bukayo Saka, Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, and captain Harry Kane. Kane, the striker, is England‘s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 114 games, including eight World Cup goals. He scored goals last season with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. One late change to England‘s squad saw Tino Livramento replaced by Trevoh Chalabah due to an injury.
Ghana Meets Panama in Toronto
Toronto Stadium will be the venue for a Group L match between Ghana and Panama. Panama, ranked 34th, is considered the favourite against No. 73 Ghana. Panama‘s star player is right-back Michael Amir Murillo, who has goals in national team games. Panama is making its second World Cup appearance, having lost all three group stage games in 2018. Midfielder Aníbal Godoy, the midfielder, is Panama‘s all-time leader in appearances, with Wednesday’s game set to be his 160th for his country.
Ghana enters the tournament amidst some controversy, as veteran midfielder Thomas Partey was denied entry into Canada for their opener. Ghana failed to advance from the group stage in the 2022 World Cup, with their best performance being a quarter-final appearance in 2010. Forward Antoine Semenyo, the forward, is expected to lead Ghana offensively, having scored goals in international appearances for Ghana.

Colombia Takes on Uzbekistan
The day’s matches will conclude at Mexico City Stadium with a Group K clash between Colombia and Uzbekistan. Colombia, ranked 14th, is returning to the World Cup for the seventh time after missing the previous tournament. The team will be led by Luis Diaz, the player, who scored goals last season, and Luis Suarez, the player. Captain James Rodríguez, the captain, who gained prominence at the 2014 World Cup with six goals, is also part of the squad, making his third World Cup appearance.
Uzbekistan, ranked 50th, is making its first World Cup appearance. The team’s defence is anchored by Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov, the defender, who has made career appearances for the national team. Forward Eldor Shomurodov holds the record for most goals for Uzbekistan with 44.
