NHL officially opens Mike Babcock investigation - Sportsnet.ca
The National Hockey League (NHL) has officially commenced an investigation into Mike Babcock’s 2023 resignation from the Columbus Blue Jackets. This development follows the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Final, allowing the league to address offseason matters. The inquiry aims to determine if Babcock is eligible to be hired by the Edmonton Oilers and if he would face any league-imposed discipline before assuming head coaching duties.
The investigation was prompted by the Edmonton Oilers’ reported interest in hiring Babcock as their new head coach. The Oilers reportedly consulted with the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) to ascertain if there were any unresolved objections regarding his potential hiring. Sources suggest that multiple parties will be interviewed as part of this process.
Babcock’s resignation from the Blue Jackets in 2023 occurred approximately two and a half months after his initial hiring. This resignation took place amidst allegations that he had infringed upon players’ privacy by requesting to view personal photographs from their mobile phones. Both the NHL and NHLPA had previously launched investigations into these allegations, leading to Babcock’s resignation before training camp.
During their search for a new head coach, the Oilers sought an individual with experience, a history of winning, and someone capable of directing the team’s star players. The organization included Babcock in their search after being denied permission to speak with Bruce Cassidy. Babcock met with the Oilers’ ownership and front office. According to multiple sources, he was one of two candidates who met directly with a small group of players in Toronto.
Executives and players across the league have indicated that Oilers management and players contacted them for feedback on Babcock. The Oilers organization subsequently contacted the league, and the players involved reached out to the NHLPA to inquire if there were any impediments to hiring him. The union reportedly reacted negatively, expressing objections in multiple conversations. However, members of the Oilers’ leadership group were reportedly satisfied with the information received from other players and Babcock directly, and were prepared to proceed with the hiring if permitted.
Reports also suggest that issues beyond the examination of players’ phones contributed to Babcock’s difficulties in Columbus. When he resigned in 2023, the NHL and NHLPA dropped the matter. However, sources indicate that at least one other conversation caused concern. An initial challenge for the current investigation is that some former Blue Jackets players and staff members have expressed reluctance to revisit the events of three years prior or participate in the inquiry.
Oilers’ interest and league considerations
Several agents representing Edmonton players who were not directly involved in discussions with Babcock have also voiced concerns. They indicated a dislike for the idea of their clients being traded to the Oilers under such circumstances. The Oilers appear willing to await the conclusions of this investigation before making a final decision on Babcock as a coaching candidate.
The allegations in Columbus were not the first instance of Babcock being accused of mistreating players. A reported incident during the 2016-17 season, when he coached the Toronto Maple Leafs, involved him allegedly forcing then-rookie Mitch Marner to create a list ranking teammates by competitiveness, which Babcock then shared with other players. There have also been allegations of player abuse, notably involving Johan Franzen, during his tenure with the Detroit Red Wings.
The league is reportedly keen to move the investigation along expeditiously. Following the conclusion of the playoffs, another consideration is Vegas’s decision regarding Bruce Cassidy. It remains to be seen if they will grant permission for the Oilers, or any other team, to speak with him. Currently, the only other coaching vacancy in the league is in Toronto.
Potential outcomes and team impact
The purpose of the NHL’s current investigation is to ascertain whether Babcock would be subject to league-imposed discipline before being able to assume head coaching responsibilities in Edmonton. The outcome will determine his eligibility to be hired by the Oilers. The situation has created a degree of uncertainty for both the club and the league.
The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 on Sunday to secure the Stanley Cup Final in six games, marking the end of the NHL season and the beginning of the league’s offseason duties.
