Canada earns first-ever World Cup point in draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina
Canada secures historic draw
Canada achieved its first-ever point in a FIFA World Cup at the senior men’s level on Friday, drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The match, held at Toronto Stadium, saw Cyle Larin score the equalizer in the 78th minute, sending the home crowd into celebration. This result marks a significant moment for Canada, which had been winless in its two previous World Cup appearances in 1986 and 2022.
The atmosphere in Toronto was vibrant, with a capacity crowd of 43,002 spectators, many wearing red Canada jerseys, cheering on their team. Celebrities such as Will Arnett and Michael Bublé helped warm up the crowd before the game, and Alanis Morissette performed the national anthem. Conditions were favourable for the match, with a temperature of 26 C at kickoff under mostly sunny skies.
Bosnia and Herzegovina opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic, making his first international goal, headed the ball past goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau from a corner kick. This gave the visitors an early lead, with their fans in the grandstand erupting in cheers.
Match details and key moments
Canada’s coach, Jesse Marsch, selected a starting lineup that included Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi up front. On defence, Alistair Johnston, Derek Cornelius, and Richie Laryea were joined by Luc de Fougerolles. Stephen Eustaquio wore the captain’s armband in the absence of regular captain Alphonso Davies, who was recovering from a leg injury.
Despite controlling possession for much of the first half, Canada struggled to put a shot on target after Bosnia and Herzegovina’s goal. Oluwaseyi had a notable chance, but his shot from inside the 18-yard box went over the bar. Bosnia and Herzegovina, ranked 64th, played a physical game, effectively cutting off Canadian crosses.
The second half saw both teams pressing for goals. Laryea nearly equalized in the 53rd minute, beating goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, but the ball deflected off Sead Kolasinac’s leg and hit the crossbar. Marsch made a triple substitution in the 61st minute, bringing on Jacob Shaffelburg, Promise David, and Ali Ahmed to inject more attacking energy into the team.
The decisive moment came when Larin entered the game as a substitute in the 76th minute. Just moments later, in the 78th minute, he fought off two defenders near the penalty area and struck the ball into the low corner, securing the equalizer for Canada.
Looking ahead for Canada
This draw provides Canada with a strong start in Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, improving their chances of advancing from the group stage. Teams earn one point for a draw in the group stage, with the top two teams advancing to the Round of 32. A third-place finisher could also qualify depending on other results.
Canada will continue its World Cup campaign with two more group-stage matches. The team will travel to Vancouver for their next game against Qatar on June 18. Following that, Canada will face Switzerland on June 24, also in Vancouver.

Bosnia and Herzegovina qualified for the tournament by upsetting Italy in a European qualifier last March. The tournament is scheduled to conclude with the final on July 19.
